Crossing the Frontier Essays
Intersection the Frontier Essays Intersection the Frontier Essay Intersection the Frontier Essay Katherine Meyer remained in the entryway of what used to be her wonderful eighteenth century apartment. The hard battle of six years of war had diminished her home to minimal in excess of a skeleton of its previous self. Her tattered kitchen had no rooftop. The window outlines despite everything stood, except the glass had since a long time ago been smothered. The absence of warming made the house dreadful cold, as though attempting to repeat the air outside. She remained in the recess and overviewed the barren scene that used to be clamoring Berlin. She used to gripe about the measure of commotion and traffic that passed her home each morning; she used to hate the boisterous servers and performers that played in the caf㠯⠿â ½s on the pavement. That was so long prior now, since quite a while ago supplanted by the dead, disintegrating city that lay before her. Demise was so evident here, it hit Katherine in the face each time she watched out at her town. Neglected structures line d each potholed road, numerous without rooftops or floors. Once in a while Katherine would discover a house totally flawless by the tumult encompassing it, and it would help Katherine to remember a more joyful time. In any case, when she glanced around again she would sink further into the downturn of war. She was unable to recall the last time she had rested for the duration of the night, as the tireless beating of shells and unremitting gabbing of gunfire resonated all through Berlin, entering even the thickest walls.Katherine Meyer had heard that the Soviets had shown up two days back, which was currently clear as the measure of shelling and gunfire had expanded ten times. Every last bit of her companions had left Berlin years back to look for wellbeing in the open country, yet Katherines truly sick dad had kept her in Berlin. She had not heard any updates on her dad since the Soviets had caught that zone of Berlin, and she dreaded the most noticeably terrible. She understood, re maining in the entryway of her home, that in the event that she planned to leave Berlin alive, at that point she should leave straight away. No report from her dad for this situation implied awful news, and she wasnt going to remain in Berlin to discover. Staying in the city implied unavoidable demise. She ran upstairs, and changed into her khaki garments that she had stowed away. She immediately filled a little sack with what remaining food and water she had left. As she ventured out onto the road, its surface scarred by long periods of fighting, she understood that Berlin was encircled, and the main way she would get out was to go straight through the Soviet lines. She was either going to escape Berlin or bite the dust trying. She strolled quickly, for she feared the sound of an approaching shell or the sound of a Soviet tank coming toward her. Sadly she knew considerably more than she ought to about how to keep off the beaten path of adversary fire. Her arrangement was to attempt to cross the Soviet lines at its tightest point, which she thought would be the eastern side of Berlin. She paced drawback boulevards and back streets, following a guide she had deliberately attracted her head. She transformed into the B㠯⠿â ½ckerstra㠯⠿â ½e, renowned for being the road with the best bread shop in Berlin. She adjusted the corner and halted with sickening apprehension. What the previous night had been a flourishing, aggressive, family run business was presently a heap of rubble. The wooden sign that read B㠯⠿â ½ckerei lay among the bloodletting, broken into equal parts, helping passers by to remember what may have been. She realized very well what might have happened to the dough puncher and his significant other, and shivered with fear at the idea. The rubble itself was obstructing the street, ascending around five feet noticeable all around, and was blocked. Katherine went to turn the other way, and encountered a Soviet soldier.Katherines first in tuition was to turn and run, endeavor to scramble over the remaining parts of the pastry kitchen. Notwithstanding, she saw that the Soviets left hand was solidly in his pocket, as though he was gripping onto something. A firearm, Katherine thought. She remained peacefully, confronting him, a thousand situations hustling inside her head, attempting to think about an exit plan. Similarly as she was going to state something, the Soviet officer went to talk. Katherine shut her eyes. To her sheer awe, he began to sing. He was more yelling than singing, and Katherine immediately acknowledged he was flushed. He was delicately influencing from side to side, as though he not, at this point had full order over his legs.He out of nowhere pulled his hand from his pocket, and Katherines heart halted. Tanked men could be entirely unusual. In a brief moment he had pulled an article from his pocket, and raised it to Katherine. Her heart avoided a beat. Her mouth went dry. She gambled a look at the item being pointed at her and help moved through her veins. She saw it was a cup. He raised it to her and afterward to his lips. Katherine took advantage of the lucky break and pushed him, pushed him as hard as possible. He faltered in reverse, stumbled over a section of concrete and lay unmoving on the floor. Taken out. Katherine immediately ventured over him and ran.She ran for an entire twenty minutes, over the desolate avenues of Berlin. She realized she was running east, and the gunfire was getting stronger. She thought she was not a long way from the Soviet lines. She proceeded a similar way for another couple of hundred meters, and afterward killed into a back street in the expectation of dodging a portion of the Soviet powers. Katherine saw a washing line hanging over the back street, dresses trickling with water, invulnerable from the war that seethed so close. She saw a little youngster, nine or ten years of age, motioning to her. He was wearing an old dim jumper, and blue pants that were amazingly torn and grimy. His face, as well, had smears of mud on it, his light hair adhered to his temple. Katherine investigated his eyes, dim and slow, eyes that had seen things far more regrettable than a ten-year-old should. He could see she was lost and shaken, and rapidly lead Katherine into a broken down house. He ran up the steps and onto the rooftop, where Katherine was given an away from of what was left of Berlin. Her speculations had been right, for she was currently just a mile from the Soviet lines. The kid was separated from everyone else, and she could see that he, as well, was scared. She understood that a young lady and her child would look far less dubious attempting to leave Berlin than a young lady alone. She would not pull in as much regard for herself. Most importantly, she needed to help the vulnerable little fellow that was remaining before her. She snatched his hand, grimy and hot, and instructed him to lead her towards the Soviet lines. He comprehended the arrangement, and began to lead her down the steps and onto the streets.Katherine moved toward the mass of Soviet troopers with extraordinary alert, holding her head down. She advised the little youngster to do likewise, and to stay away from eye to eye connection with any warrior. The further through the crowd of officers they went, the more tight they held every others hand. They sifted through potholes, open air fires, tents and moving Soviet warriors, a significant number of whom, Katherine saw, were tanked. The smell of liquor was solid noticeable all around. Out of nowhere, the little youngster lurched, his drained legs vacillating for a solitary second. He fell at the feet of a Soviet, who quickly remembered him as a German. Katherine pulled him up, and clipped a turn in his shoulder. She gazed at the Soviet, and he gazed back. She saw generosity in his eyes, and he grinned at her. He cleared out, and let them pass. She was forever thankful to him, despite th e fact that she could never observe the fighter again. They continued strolling for another three or four miles, until they went to an extension. Katherine chose to stop for a second, and dangle her legs into the refreshingly super cold water that streamed beneath. The little youngster abandoned off under the scaffold, seeing something covered up in the tall grass. With all the quality he could assemble he pulled out a corroded bike, with two punctured tires and no seat. She grinned, and afterward she chuckled. She embraced the little youngster.

Systematic Investigation
Systematic Investigation Systematic Investigation HomeâºResearch PostsâºSystematic Investigation Research PostsIntroduction to the studyThe authors of this study assert that mentally challenged humans have had preference assessment tests used on them, in conjunction with behavioral modification sessions, at a regular basis. Preference assessment-tests are therefore a regular component of all operant conditioning programs that have been applied to these mentally challenged people. Itâs effectiveness in the improvement of the efficiency of behavioral training in such settings is exemplary, and the authors suggest it could be similarly effective in zoology and environmental research. The study conducted was of the preferences of nine captive orangutans, and were investigated for different food items. The researchers used a pair wise presentation onto, in the recording of nonhuman, animal preferences as concerned five different foods. Over the course of six months, this was on six different occasions. The orangutans, according to the Results of a Friedmanâs 2-way, were found to show a clear overall preference for simple apple. For the five foods, though, there was a significant variability among different orangutans in the preference rankings. This assumption was derived by the readings shown by a Kendallâs tau. Additionally, there was a variability preference in the rankings observed across time for every orangutan. Basically, the preferences of the Orangutanâs change over time. The variations also occur according to individual and regular assessments that should identify items that were used as rewards in behavioral husbandry training. It could be used as a part of feeding enrichment strategies. The researchers are inspired and motivated by the fact that over the past 15 years, very positive reinforcement in training has become popular in aspects of zoological institution and in non-human animal laboratory facilities. A difference exists on how individual animals respond to tr ainings and the speed of their progress. The researchers observe that a first reason for this variation is how positive reinforcement creates a difference in the response of individuals. Itâs typical how preferences of individual primates for particular food rewards are assessed by means of no empirical uses by people who conduct training. However there are obvious imperfections to the assessment. An empirical means may be helpful to determine individual preferences. The researchers acknowledge the extensiveness of the research done with human subjects.A look at the human research as a model when initiating preference research studies on nonhuman primates is therefore necessary.A description of the methodsThe subjectsTo obtain quality results for their study, the researchers had to choose the subjects and analyze their procedures carefully. They chose nine Orangutans that were housed at Zoo Atlanta and these included 4 adult males 1 juvenile, as well as 4 adult female Orangutans. Among them were seven Sumatran Orangutans and 1 adult male Bornean Orangutan as well as an adult male hybrid. In an indoor/outdoor holding area, they were safely housed. It was during the mornings that all test sessions were conducted, and this had to be before the animals were fed. It was done in the indoor holding area as well. While Andrea W. Clay conducted the testing on 6 different occasions from September to December 2006, all the testing was complied with protocols that received approval by the Zoo Atlanta as well as by Georgia Institute of Technology. This is the institute of Animal Care and Use Committee.ProceduresGrapefruit, orange, apple, sweet potato, and carrot were the 5 items of fresh produce tested and each of the subjects were familiar with each of these foods. A standard PC method was used when presenting the items and it ensured a balance for left and right location and the randomization of the pairs presented during each session. The arrangement made on each possi ble pairing had item (a) on the left while (b) was maintained on right, then (b) on left and (a) on the right and was presented once per session in that it resulted to 20 pairings per session. 1 inch is the rough estimate for the food piece cuttings. A lexan tray was used to present the food pieces, and it had two equally sized recessed dishes at one end. The animals selected one of the two items by pointing when this end of the tray was help up to the mesh of the Orangutans enclosure. Each of the animals easily pointed to one of the two items. But there were occasions where they pointed at once, to each of the two items. As indicated, 6 sessions for each of the animals were conducted for each animal over the period of the six months. To determine if there were individual biases, a Chi-square test was used and the total left versus total right selections for each animal throughout all six sessions. If the animalâs selections were being determined by food preference, rather than s ide bias, then an approximate of 50% left and 50% right should have been the score. The preference of the group of subjects was analyzed using a Friedmanâs two-way ANOVA and Kendallâs tau tests were used to analyze the preferences of the group of subjects. Therefore, Kendals tau tests were used to analyze the different orangutans and specifically for individual orangutans across test sessions. A summary of the resultsOf the female orangutans, one actually showed a significant side bias in her responding as it indicated a significant Chi-square value; hence the researchers dropped her from the analysis.A score was obtained for each of the five food items, and each of the test session by using this formula; number of times selected/ number of times the item was presented. The 100D% score was for each of the particular items. The calculation was done for each of the individual, and hence there was a score for each food item as obtained in each test session for every individual ani mal.The computation of a mean score was done for each item and the rating across all six sessions for all the orangutans. An indication by A Friendmanâs two-way test was that the Orangutans, in all, had a preference for some of the food items over others. Apple was the highest in the overall score, and what followed were the orange, sweet potato, grape fruit, and finally the carrot. The tabulation was tabled.Individual preferences were compared, and mean percentage score were obtained for each food item throughout all six sessions for each individual animal. A comparison of the scores was done too.Individual rating scores were graphed for the foods across six sessions and this was necessary to access the stability of each individual orangutan. Some animals, though, had relatively stable score while others did not.ConclusionThe importance of these applications could not be emphasized more, according to the researchers. And when the goal of the entire study is to use items from th e animalâs daily diet for training and enrichment purposes, it is even more beneficial. The use of preference-assessment tests in conjunction with enrichment or training procedures to determine effects of using preferred items could provide a logical progression from the findings of the study and can use preferred items as rewards. This is opposed to the use of randomly selected items. It has shown that there is an increased efficiency in training behaviors in humans when this is used and should therefore be considered assessing as a method for increasing efficiency of training behaviors in non-human primates as well.

Trump and Iran - Free Essay Example
I have chosen to analyze Donald Trump through the lens of realism. Realisms use in international relations is fairly new. The basic ideas of realism can be traced back to classical texts such as Thucydides History of the Peloponnesian War. Realism essentially says that people are afraid and try to self-preserve by obtaining power. Within realism are two sub-theories which are classical realism and neorealism. Classical realism believes that it is human nature which is responsible for conflict and war. Neorealism posits that it is the anarchic system that is responsible. Realists main concern is the accumulation of power. They believe that states try to gain power in an attempt to either deter other states from engaging in war, or have the greatest advantage when war does occur. Power can be expressed in many ways. It can be having the most, and most powerful and advanced weapons. It can be having access to natural resources such as oil. Strategic location of a state can also be a source of power; how many states share your borders or what percentage of your borders are land or water. Population size can be a source of power as well. Realists focus mainly on the international level of analysis. They believe that states always act in their own self-interest. Also, that the international system is anarchic; there is no governing force that regulates international relations. Realists believe that when a state goes to war, that state will not be swayed by any individual or sub-state actor. IRAN I decided to research the Trump administrations relationship with Iran. For many years the US had a great relationship with the country. Iran was an important ally for the US in the middle east during the Cold War. The relationship between Iran and the United States has been turbulent since the end of the 70s. Iran has had a very anti-American stance and supported groups widely considered to be terrorist organizations. Also, their pursuit of nuclear technology has had many countries around the world worried. Prior to the Cold War, the US had little interest in Iran. During the Cold War, the then Shah of Irans desire to increase its military capabilities and national defense, and the United States desire to fight communism led to an important alliance between the two countries. The US played a key role in the 1953 coup d?Ã ©tat which overthrew the Prime Minister of Iran. Over the next few decades, much military and financial assistance was given to the Iranian government. Ironicall y, the US also gave Iran the nuclear technology that has become the main issue today. Much of Irans population resented the United States for their role in the 1953 coup. In 1979, a revolution removed the Shah and replaced him with an anti-American ruler Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Shortly after, a group of students who feared that the US was planning another coup, overtook the US embassy and took 52 American diplomats hostage. The hostage situation greatly devastated US-Iranian relations. In 1980, President Carter cut ties with Iran. In the early 2000s, it was discovered that Iran was enriching uranium and was attempting to develop nuclear weapons. Over the next few years, the US and its allies imposed sanctions on Iran in an attempt to deter them from continuing to try and produce nuclear weapons. In 2015, the US along with China, Germany, France, Russia, England, and the EU helped sign the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) which was supposed to prevent Iran from developing the technology to create nuclear weapons. It also lifted sanctions on Iran. Iran almost immediately violated the agreement and began testing long range ballistic missiles. Iran continued to violate the agreement multiple times although they deny that their actions were in violation of the plan. President Trump has been a very harsh critic of Iran and the JCPOA. He believes that paralyzing sanctions were removed and replaced by a weak deal that failed to stop Irans development of ballistic missiles or address Irans activity in countries such as Yemen or Syria. He believes that the sanctions gave the US bargaining power and a strong grip on Iran. In May of 2018, President Trump pulled out of the JCPOA and re-imposed sanctions. EXPLANATION The policy decisions President Trump has made towards Iran greatly reflect those of a realist. He views Iran as a threat to American power and to the safety of American service members, citizens, and its allies. In a speech, Trump said essentially that Iran is a major contributor to conflicts in the middle east, is a supporter of many terrorist organizations, and that their quest to develop nukes is a major threat to the world. He also believes that the JCPOA was weak and did little to curb Irans bad behavior in the region. Iran has been seen for a long time as a threat to the United States and its interests abroad. In May, Trump removed the US from the Iran deal. He saw the deal as weak and putting the US in a bad position. He wants an agreement where Iran fully abandons their nuclear and ballistic missile development, allows regular inspections of important locations such as military bases, and halts their involvement in other conflicts in the middle east. Trump sites documents s eized by Israeli forces from a storage facility in Tehran. He claims that the documents provide sufficient evidence that Iran has been violating the agreement and either has been or intends to continue their pursuit of nuclear weapons. According to other sources though, there is nothing in the documents that says that Iran has been pursuing the development of nuclear weapons since the deal was made. Trump has stated that he doesnt feel that the deal is strict enough to prevent Iran from continuing their research. He believes that allowing the regime to continue any enrichment of uranium is dangerous and that they will continue to attempt to create weapons grade uranium. Iran has violated the deal in other ways though, multiple times since it was made. Iran has test fired long range ballistic missiles that could carry multiple nuclear warheads. The UN had banned Irans import of ballistic missile technology for up to eight years. The deal also doesnt help stop Irans poor behavior in supporting terrorist groups or brutal wars in the middle east. Iran is a supporter of groups such as the Taliban, Hezbollah, Hamas, and Al Qaeda. Iran has supported the development of these groups and some of their attacks against American military personnel and citizens. Trumps strategy against Iran is to use sanctions rather than military force to cripple the regime. The US alone has pulled out of the JCPOA, to the dismay of its European allies, and implemented sanctions in an attempt to strong arm Iran into compliance. Trump is attempting to cut off all Iranian oil exports, and threatening to implement sanctions against any state that continues to buy oil from Iran. He believes that if he continues to implement sanctions against Iran, that they will not continue their research into nuclear fuel, European allies will eventually join in on the sanctions as well, and ultimately the regime will submit and negotiate a new deal with the Trump administration. And the end goal is to oust the current regime and reinstall democracy in the country. EVALUATION Tensions between the US and Iran have definitely gotten worse since Donald Trump was elected into office. His position towards Iran has been hostile and he has given them no wiggle room. Other states that were part of the JCPOA believed that the deal was sufficient and they were against the US pulling out. President Trump seems to pay little attention to the advice of others. Its hard to say what Trumps true intentions are because what he says, and what he does many times do no align, and what he says is frequently not quite the truth. CONCLUSION Trump clearly displays behavior that classifies him as a realist. He has made little to no effort to establish diplomatic relations with Iran and has been harsh with his sanctions. His actions appear to be attempting to place the US in a more powerful position in the world. It could be said that Donald Trump might be a constructivist as well. He appears to be trying to change ideas about how government should be run. None the less, he has made it very clear that he believes that the previous deal with Iran put the US in a very weak position and that the US had a lot of leverage on Iran prior to the deal being made. He wants to create a deal that will keep a nuclear arms race from happening in the middle east and put the US in a more powerful position in the international system.

Differences Between Après vs. Derrière and Avant vs. Devant
Aprà ¨s and Avant convey a notion of time or space. Aprà ¨s refers to doing something after while Avant refers to doing something before. Je le retrouve aprà ¨s/avant le dà ©jeunerIll meet up with him after/before lunch Aprà ¨s/avant le bois, il y a un cheminAfter/before the wood, there is a path Derriere and Devant convey a notion of precise space. Derrier refers to being behind something, or someone and Devant refers to being in front of something or someone. La petite fille est cachà ©e derrià ¨re larbreThe young girl is hidden behind the tree Pour la photo, comme tu es plus petite, va devant Camille. For the picture, since you are smaller, go in front of Camille.à Derrià ¨re le bois, il y a un cheminBehind the wood, there is a path Aprà ¨s and Derrià ¨re Are Not Interchangeable So, what is the difference between the two sentences aprà ¨s le bois, il y a un chemin and derrià ¨re le bois, il y a un chemin? They both give a piece of space-related information, but one is more precise, just like in English. Same exact logic applies to avant versus devant. Aprà ¨s Que Indicative / Avant Que Subjunctive A common mistake is Aprà ¨s que plus a subjunctive. Its a very common mistake, even among French people, because honestly, the indicative sounds terrible there. Avant que is followed by the subjunctiveà because we dont yet know if the action is going to become a reality. With Aprà ¨s que, the action has taken place already: there is no doubt left, hence no need for the subjunctive. Aprà ¨s que subjunctive sounds so bad to a French ear that we will do our best to use a noun instead of a verb after. You can use the same trick with avant que et avoid using a subjunctive. Je dois commencer aprà ¨s quil part. (or aprà ¨s son dà ©part)I must start after he leaves (or after his departure). Je dois commencer avant quil parte (or avant son dà ©part).I must start before he leaves (or before his departure) By the way, even if we use le derrià ¨re in French (although this is extremely polite, just like saying the behind in English), French people use the preposition derrià ¨re without thinking about it at all. Just like in English you use behind without thinking about that part of the anatomy.

Introduction This short paper aims to describe the role of technology in supply chains and assess its advantages and disadvantages. Supply chain management comprises the active management of organisational procurement, logistics, production and distribution activities for the maximisation of customer value and achievement of competitive advantage (Carter Rogers, 2008). It concerns the effective and optimal management of goods from the procurement of raw materials from basic suppliers to the delivery of products to ultimate consumers, and even beyond in terms of the return or the consumption or disposal of such goods (Carter Rogers, 2008). Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "The Role of Technology in Supply Chains" essay for you Create order Several developments in recent years have however resulted in significant changes in organisational attitudes towards supply chains, sharply enhanced focus upon the area, and efforts for increasing the effectiveness of the SCM function (Chopra Meindl, 2012). Various geopolitical and socioeconomic developments like the growth of a unipolar global order, the dominance of market-oriented economic activity, globalisation, economic liberalisation, and tremendous advances in transportation and communication technology, have resulted in enormous expansion of markets and the dispersal of production and manufacturing centres (Chopra Meindl, 2012) With organisations engaging in sourcing of raw materials, production, research and development and sales and marketing in geographically distant locations, modern firms are placing great stress upon optimising the efficiencies and cost effectiveness of their SCM functions (Ghorban, 2011). Such organisational focus on enhancement of SCM effect iveness has also led to constant efforts for technological up-gradation and introduction of new technologies for optimisation of supply chain and enhancement of organisational competitiveness (Kremian, 2013). This paper describes and discusses some of these modern SCM technologies, the reasons for their induction and their merits and demerits. It attempts to detail the advantages and disadvantages of new technological introductions in SCM, making use of theory as well as several practical applications, especially in the area of warehouse management. Introduction of New Technologies in SCM Activities and Processes Ghorban (2011) stated that technology has crept into SCM in a gradual and progressive manner, commencing with actions like electronic invoicing, computerised tracking and shipping and automated notifications and moving on to diverse and numerous other applications. Such incorporation of new technologies is being driven by diverse forces, like increasing customer expectations, intensification of competition, increasing fuel costs and greater demand for inventory control and Just in Time (JIT) management (Faze, 1997). It is important to appreciate that contemporary technology has extensive capabilities, with regard to ensuring organisational production in line with schedules, the anticipation and correction of mistakes and the making of modifications for guaranteeing top quality products (Intermec Technologies Corporation, 2007). Each and every link in a supply chain can be simultaneously monitored and automated notification systems can be used for sending messages to diverse play ers through different channels (Intermec Technologies Corporation, 2007). Some of the top trends and technologies impacting supply chain operations, spanning production, distribution, retailing and remote servicing include (1) comprehensive connectivity, (2) voice and GPS communication integrated to rugged computers, (3) speech recognition, (4) digital imaging, (5) portable printing, (6) bar-coding advances, (7) remote management and (8) wireless and device security (Cohen Roussel, 2013). Taking up the case of voice and GPS communication, leading cellular carriers have certified the utility of rugged hand held computers, which facilitate voice communication, data connection and cell phone functionality through one device (Cohen Roussel, 2013). Stanley Steemer, a carpet cleaning franchisee made use of GPS and real time two-way communication to improve efficiencies, which resulted in the elimination of a fulltime despatch official at each of its branches and greatly reduced the time required for completion of process paper work (Chopra Meindl, 2012). Software programme and cloud computing have significantly improved material and product tracking, with real time updates of status now available without difficulty (Vella, 2012). These programmes furthermore allow business firms to adjust production schedules and inventory levels on a real time basis (Vella, 2012). With companies appreciating the advantages of technology incorporation in SCM, several multinational corporations have taken the lead and stand out as pioneers in the area(Intermec Technologies Corporation, 2007). The John Deere Company made use of sophisticated logistics management software to enhance its onetime shipments to dealers from 60 to 92 percent, even as it reduced its inventory by 1 billion USD(Intermec Technologies Corporation, 2007). Nike worked with DHL Supply Chain to implement radio based product monitoring for warehouse and distribution purposes and real time delivery notificatio ns, thereby reducing costs and increasing efficiencies(Ghorban, 2011). Walmart, the largest global retailer, has long been known for its SCM processes(Ghorban, 2011). The company is constantly engaged in using modern technology and network systems for predicting demand, tracking inventory levels and planning efficient transport routes(Ghorban, 2011). It is important, in this context to appreciate that the introduction of new technologies has resulted in significant alterations in the conduct of specific SCM functions, like warehouse management (Halldorsson et al., 2007)). Searching for enhancements in efficiency and profitability, modern organisations have adopted various new technologies that have resulted in significant transformations in the management of warehousing functions(Carter Rogers, 2008). The introduction of wireless technology and mobility has resulted in the development of a range of new products for enhancement of organisational productivity and profitability(Cart er Rogers, 2008). Some of these technological innovations are detailed below: Warehouse Management Systems Developments in warehouse management systems are being used to assist business firms in controlling the movement and storage of materials within warehouses (Simchi-Levi et al., 2007). Such systems are being used for diverse warehouse management functions like inventory management, including transactions like receiving, picking, packing and shipping, real-time monitoring of stocks, progression of products through warehouses and ensuring the elimination of obsolescence(Intermec Technologies Corporation, 2007). Barcode Labels and Scanners Barcode scanners, which were developed soon after the introduction of wireless technology, have become a common element of warehouse equipment (Vella, 2012). Barcode scanners are hardware devices that enable users to read barcodes, printout labels or product information and log products into the database of the warehouse management system (Vella, 2012). They are available in various types and come with different utilities (Poirier Quinn, 2006). Barcode label printers are used by warehouse managers for printing product labels, shipping labels and bin labels(Reinertsen, 2009). Easy to use and cost effective, these devices help business firms to enhance the accessibility of management and data and augment productivity(Reinertsen, 2009). Voice Hardware Voice technology has recently been introduced in the area of warehouse management (Poirier Quinn, 2006). These devices are now being used by firms to determine and finalise the amount of goods to be picked up (Vella, 2012). Voice hardware devices are fastened to wireless computers, with the data being transmitted to the device at the time of picking an order to ensure that the picker knows the product and the amount of items to be picked (Simchi-Levi et al., 2007). Several companies have started incorporating voice hardware, despite its costs, in order to save time(Ghorban, 2011). Mobile Computers Mobile computers are basically barcode scanners with their own display screens and operating systems(Reinertsen, 2009). The hardware for these products has been designed to ensure that they can function like portable PCs with barcode scanning capabilities(Ghorban, 2011). With mobility becoming increasingly desirable, organisations are adopting mobile warehouse management solutions(Ghorban, 2011). Such devices are proving to be extremely beneficial for organisations wishing to enhance accessibility to real time data and employee productivity (Poirier Quinn, 2006). Advantages and Disadvantages of Introduction of New Technology in Supply Chain Management There is little doubt of the various advantages that can arise for companies from the adoption of new technology (Poirier Quinn, 2006). Several firms have been able to achieve significant reductions in costs through the use of barcodes, advanced picking and other technologies in order to leverage their warehouse and transportation management systems (Poirier Quinn, 2006). Several organisations have made use of advanced planning and scheduling systems for bringing about dramatic reductions in inventory levels and improving customer service (Poirier Quinn, 2006). Pujawan (2004) stated that the introduction of new technology was likely to result in enhanced costs, disruption of work and the need to learn new things and eliminate old practices. He furthermore stated that modern businesses have, despite these challenges, been able to apply technology to convert their supply chain into profit generators through the reduction of costs and inventory levels and the enhancement of custome r service (Pujawan, 2004). Coke, for example, upgraded its demand planning and collaboration capabilities into 2005 through the introduction of new inventory management processes, supported by software(Ghorban, 2011). This enabled the firm to improve fill rates by 15% and reduce inventory levels by 50%(Ghorban, 2011). The organisation was able to simultaneously absorb a 300% increase in product offerings, which resulted in a surge in profits through the reduction of assets and the support in enhancement of revenues through greater product availability(Ghorban, 2011). The introduction of new technologies in SCM must however be carried out with great care and thought and in accordance with organisational requirements (Pujawan, 2004). New devices and system are expensive to purchase and install (Pujawan, 2004). Their utilisation furthermore calls for significant training and haphazard and unplanned implementation can result in a number of organisational problems(Carter Rogers, 2008) . Investigation into the problems and disadvantages of introduction of new technology into SCM revealed that several organisations have faced different types of problems on this account(Carter Rogers, 2008). A retailer specialising in childrens toys, for example, exceeded both the time schedule and the budget in the implementation of a new fulfilment system(Carter Rogers, 2008). The occurrence of the Christmas demand spike before the completion of the fulfilment system led to severe challenges in the processing of orders (Sharma, 2010). Whilst organisational employees worked for 50 days at a stretch without holidays to satisfy customers, the firm was forced to delay deliveries till after Christmas to thousands of their buyers(Carter Rogers, 2008). SCM experts have stated that the width and scope of common SCM processes, like, for example, warehousing or transportation, are so extensive that the introduction of new technology was likely to involve significant costs, time and ch allenges associated with organisational change(Simchi-Levi et al., 2007). The majority of new technologies comprisedboth hardware and software and are expensive to purchase and install (Simchi-Levi et al., 2007). Organisations with limited operations and funds may thus not be able to obtain commensurate benefits from the implementation of such technologies by way of cost reduction or enhanced business (Sharma, 2010). Many of these new systems are furthermore complex in nature and take time to install and operate(Carter Rogers, 2008). With such installation likely to disrupt existing organisational operations, the managers of firms introducing new technologies have to plan their strategies in this regard with great care to ensure minimisation of operational disruption and customer dissatisfaction(Carter Rogers, 2008). It is also important to keep in mind that the introduction of new technologies is bound to result in significant changes in operational activities and possibly to re dundancy of labour, both of which could result in change resistance amongst employees and to opposition to organisational plans in this regard (Simchi-Levi et al., 2007). Conclusions The study reveals that whilst the introduction of new technologies in organisational SCM processes can result in several types of organisational benefits by way of (a) reduction of costs, (b) lowering of time, (c) reduction in inventory, (d) elimination of people and (e) enhancement of volumes amongst others, such introduction was likely to be expensive, complex and demanding in nature(Carter Rogers, 2008). Organisational managements should, in such circumstances, introduce new technologies only after ascertaining the benefits from such actions for their organisations (Poirier Quinn, 2006). Great care should also be taken in the planning, implementation and installation of these technologies, with particular regard to operational disruption and organisational change (Poirier Quinn, 2006). It has for example been explained earlier that the introduction of new technologies could help in reduction of costs through elimination of people. Such redundancies could however result in e mployee dissatisfaction and organisational strife. Organisational managements must, when introducing new technologies, take care to consider the various aspects and consequences of such actions and take appropriate actions. Lack of thought and care in these areas could result in inadequate and inappropriate implementation and extremely adverse organisational consequences (Poirier Quinn, 2006). The Amendment Of The Fourteenth Amendment - 1875 Words
The Fourteenth Amendment stopped unlawful actions by states. It also gave Congress the power to enforce the amendment through new laws that benefited and were fair to everyone. The Fourteenth Amendment represents part of the extension of the power of the national government over the states. It has been cited in more court cases than any other part of the Constitution. It made it possible for new legislation that has protected the rights of many throughout the United States and has helped uphold equality. Although the language is simple it has caused lots of controversy over its interpretation. Beginning with the Slaughterhouse Cases, the Supreme Court has decided cases involving the Fourteenth Amendment by being selective about how to apply the most minimal rights needed to decide each case, and never really declaring that the Fourteenth Amendment protects all rights recognized by the Constitution. This has led to the adoption of selective incorporation and unremunerated rights. The Slaughterhouse Cases, 83 U.S. 36 (1873), was the Supreme Courts first time attempt to interpret the Fourteenth Amendment in its relation to peoples Constitutional rights. It was important in establishing the privileges and immunities clause. Ratification provided the Supreme Court with a way for protecting economic rights starting with overturning the Dred Scott v. Sanford case, 60 U.S. 393 (1857). There Gilgamesh the male monarch said to the boater: # 8220 ; Study the brickwork, analyze the munition ; ascent the great ancient stairway to the patio ; analyze how it is made ; from the patio see the planted and fallow Fieldss, the pools and groves. One conference is the interior metropolis, another conference is groves ; still another the Fieldss beyond ; over there is the precinct of the temple. Three conferences and the temple precinct of Ishtar step Uruk, the metropolis of Gilgamesh. # 8211 ; Gilgamesh, Tablet XI, lines 366-376 Apollo # 8217 ; s temple was built of antediluvian stone, And there I prayed: # 8216 ; Grant us a place, Apollo, Give walls to weary work forces, a race, a metropolis That will stay ; continue Troy # 8217 ; s other fortress, The leftover left by the Greeks and difficult Achilles. Whom do we follow? where are we bidden to travel To happen our colony? An portent, male parent! # 8217 ; # 8211 ; The Aeneid, Book III, lines 83-89 They protect, shelter, defend, preserve, guard, house, and outlast us. To a rolling adult male without a place, hardy walls are a boom, able to further future coevalss of vanquishers. To a ungratified adult male seeking for immortality, walls may be the lone things that outlive him. Gilgamesh and Aeneas came from similar backgrounds, but lived really different lives. Both were portion adult male and portion God, and both were respected by their followings. However, Gilgamesh was the male monarch of a stable land ; drowsy with power, he searched for escapade and exhilaration to stave off the ennui of the Crown. Aeneas was driven from place, a leader of a set of expatriates who had escapade apparently drop into their laps. For both Gilgamesh and Aeneas walls had a really particular significance ; walls were stableness in an unstable universe and more # 8211 ; they were a connexion to the Gods. In some signifier or another, both work forces longed to hold their celebrity live on. Gilgamesh chose to seek the How-the-Old-Man-Once-Again-Becomes-a-Young-Man works, because it would allow him immortality. When he lost the works, he realized he was contending a losing conflict. He decided, alternatively, to take pride in the glorification of his metropolis, strong and sturdy: # 8220 ; # 8216 ; Study the brickwork, analyze the fortification. # 8221 ; He knew the quality of the brickwork and the munitions, that the walls of Uruk would stand for a long, long clip. After a life full of escapade and bad luck, and after holding lost a opportunity at immortality, the walls were one of the few things that could give him a sense of stableness, permanency. He invited the boater to see the admirations of his metropolis: # 8220 ; climb the great ancient stairway. . .. # 8221 ; The word # 8220 ; ancient # 8221 ; is besides soothing, because it implies the metropolis existed long earlier Gilgamesh, and would likely go on to be long after he was dead. Aeneas is besides looking for permanency: # 8220 ; Give walls to weary men.â⬠The word ââ¬Å"wearyâ⬠suggests a changeless battle. After old ages of seeking for a place, the realisation of walls would be the material of dreams. He went on to state ââ¬Å"a race, a metropolis that will abide.â⬠He linked the endurance of his people, the ââ¬Å"race, â⬠with the length of service of the metropolis walls, so that the strength of the metropolis would reflect upon the strength of the people. When he said, ââ¬Å"preserve Troyââ¬â¢s other fortress, the leftover left by the Greeks. . ..â⬠He was mentioning to the Trojan refugees. But the word fortress evokes images of tall, strong walls, firm and able to defy any onslaught. By comparing his people to a fortress, Aeneas was reemphasizing the importance of endurance in the battle for endurance. Aeneas was spurned on by destiny, cognizing it was his responsibility to establish a line of work forces who would go the future vanquishers of the universe, constructing an imperium tha t would last for centuries. Gilgamesh and Aeneas relied upon the construction of walls for a sense of endurance and balance, but the metropolis walls besides provided a nexus to their Gods. Gilgamesh emphasized the importance of the temple in his description of Uruk: # 8220 ; Over there is the precinct of the temple. Three conferences and the temple precinct of Ishtar step Uruk, the metropolis of Gilgamesh. # 8221 ; The temple territory is associated and should be synonymous with the Gods. By singling out the temple territory, he created an country unique to all others in the metropolis, because it was the lone precinct worth adverting. The 2nd sentence made the temple precinct of Ishtar an built-in portion of the metropolis of Gilgamesh, as though it would non be Uruk without that peculiar precinct. It would hold sufficed to state, # 8220 ; Four conferences step Uruk. . . # 8221 ; , but calling the precinct brings the Gods into the metropolis, and doing the temple an indispensable portion of Uruk makes the Gods an indispensable portion of Uruk. The temple, as a bastioned brick construction, is an rock outcrop of the metropolis walls ; the stableness Gilgamesh feels from the metropolis walls is indistinguishable to the feeling from the temple, but more so because the temple houses the antediluvian, immortal ( and therefore unchanging ) Gods. For Aeneas, walls were a direct blessing from the Gods: # 8220 ; Apollo # 8217 ; s temple was built of antediluvian stone, and at that place I prayed: # 8216 ; Grant us a place, Apollo. . .. # 8221 ; It was of import to Aeneas that Apollo # 8217 ; s temple be built of antediluvian stone because # 8220 ; ancient # 8221 ; suggests immortality and # 8220 ; stone # 8221 ; is lasting, both of which can be features attributed to the Gods ; therefore it is suiting that Apollo # 8217 ; s temple be characteristic of Apollo himself. Aeneas so pleaded with Apollo to supply walls for the expatriates, and thereby carry through his fate. Therefore when Aeneas obtained his walls, they could be attributed to the good will of Apollo. The heroic poems of Gilgamesh and Aeneas are both about happening stableness in a rickety universe. The walls Gilgamesh and Aeneas built for themselves represent such stableness, and provided a agencies by which their celebrity could outlast them. But more than that, their walls provided stableness in their connexion to the Gods, the Gods being the prototype of permanency and immortality.
