Essay on Duty versus Charity Why a Distinction is Essential

In the late 1960’s and into the 1970’s, the South Asian region of East Bengal (then East Pakistan, now the country of Bangladesh) was undergoing a severe famine, due to rampant poverty, a civil war and frequent cyclones. The lack of overseas help to this impoverished region was probably what triggered Peter Singer to write the article Famine, Affluence and Morality, wherein he claims that world hunger and famine can be prevented and possibly eradicated if everyone in the wealthy nations did their bit to help the sufferers monetarily. Singer further claims that duty and charity should not be as distinct as they are now, and hints at uniting the two. Upon careful analysis of Singer’s paper, one can find multiple loopholes in this proposal,†¦show more content†¦A duty is any action which is not only correct in when it is performed, but wrong when flouted. Charity, on the other hand, is an act of giving that is upright to do, but not wrong when not done. Her e lies the major difference between the two – a duty is something that must be done in order for the existence of society, whereas charity is voluntary and uncompelled. It is this distinction that Singer wishes to erase, or at least blur. He wants to make monetary help to the distant needy a dutiable action rather than charity on a moral level. In fact, Singer proposes that everyone who possesses a reasonable amount of resources must donate a significant portion of their wealth and assets, reducing their self to â€Å"the level of marginal utility† (Singer 32). If not that, he suggests one ought to donate enough to make the â€Å"consumer society†¦ slow down and perhaps disappear entirely† (Singer 32). However, there must be a limit to doing so, since slowing the economy down by a lot might result in the loss of resources that could be given away. Singer understands that there might be objections to his ideas. One of the first counterarguments he tackles is the idea that such a huge change when brought about might cause a societal breakdown. He argues that if there is a change in the moral expectations of society, this idea might not seem too drastic to cause any sort of a breakdown. The needs assessment for Safety Training for School Bus Drivers correctly identified the training needs for the organization and for the bus driver position; however, it does not include other key players who should have training such as the Pupil Transportation Supervisor and School Administrators. It is important to include the supervisors and administrators into the training as they oversee these employees as are accountable for bus safety. Responsibility is extremely high for school bus drivers. The learning objectives are not specific, measureable, realistic, or acceptable. Because of the legalities and requirements for driving a bus there should be multiple learning objectives. There are several safety challenges a bus driver faces each day. By the end of the year I could tell I was making a difference. Many came to me whenever they needed someone to listen and help. Although I could not make their decisions for them, I hoped that the guidance I offered was enough to help them through their problems. Leadership is to be shown, not dictated. I had to prove myself as trustworthy through leading by example. I feel gratified when I know that the little things I did to gain their trust eventually paid off.I show leadership in both my academics and extracurricular activities. Being a leader is an opportunity and an experience that is unique and different for each person. I have had the pleasure to help people both directly and indirectly through all the opportunities I have been given. I presented myself as a leader for my link crew kids so that they in turn would know they could trust me. The things I accomplish, even those that are not glorified, are done because of the fact that I took action to lead and do them. I lead to be a mentor. I lead to serve. I lead to get things done.
