The Needs Assessment For Safety Training For School Bus...

The needs assessment for Safety Training for School Bus Drivers correctly identified the training needs for the organization and for the bus driver position; however, it does not include other key players who should have training such as the Pupil Transportation Supervisor and School Administrators. It is important to include the supervisors and administrators into the training as they oversee these employees as are accountable for bus safety. Responsibility is extremely high for school bus drivers. The learning objectives are not specific, measureable, realistic, or acceptable. Because of the legalities and requirements for driving a bus there should be multiple learning objectives. There are several safety challenges a bus driver faces each day. Each of these challenges should have a training session along with learning objectives. There are federal and state requirements for school bus training; a two-hour session would not cover all of the objectives adequately. Both objectives can be further divided into multiple learning objectives to include on road distractions traffic safety that address motorcycles, teen and elderly drivers, bicycles, pedestrians, and aggressive drivers along with weather conditions, emergency evacuations, driver’s attitude, impaired driving, and route knowledge. Fatalities and injuries occur from several bus related incidents where often times the driver is found at fault (NHTSA, n.d.).
